How to Prevent Wrinkles in Decoupage*****
Wrinkles occur when paper absorbs too much moisture, expands unevenly, or is pressed onto the surface before trapped air can escape.
Paper Napkins
Use only the top printed layer.
Apply a thin, even coat of decoupage glue to the surface, never directly to the napkin.
Position one edge first and lower the napkin gradually.
Smooth very gently from the centre outwards.
Use a soft brush or plastic wrap to avoid tearing.
Do not repeatedly brush or reposition the napkin once it is wet.
For flat, heat-resistant surfaces, the iron-on method gives the smoothest result: dry the glue first, position the napkin, cover with parchment paper and iron on low heat without steam.
Napkins are extremely delicate and absorb moisture quickly, so minimal handling is essential.
Rice Paper for Decoupage
Do not soak the paper.
Apply a thin, uniform layer of proper decoupage adhesive.
Lower the sheet gradually from one side rather than placing it down all at once.
Smooth from the centre towards the edges using a soft brush, silicone tool or plastic wrap.
Do not stretch, pull or overwork wet rice paper.
Allow the adhesive underneath to dry fully before applying a protective topcoat.
Use several thin sealing coats rather than one heavy coat.
Rice paper is stronger and more stable than a napkin, but excessive glue or repeated brushing can still cause waves and wrinkles.
Curved Surfaces
For bottles, baubles, eggs or rounded objects:
use smaller pieces;
make small relief cuts around the edges;
overlap sections discreetly;
avoid applying one large sheet over a strongly curved surface.
The Most Important Rule
Use enough adhesive for full contact, but never enough to saturate the paper. Apply gradually, smooth gently and stop working before the paper becomes over-softened. Remember that applying decoupage paper is not as easy as it may seem at first. I strongly recommend practising and watching tutorials that demonstrate the technique correctly - ideally from someone who genuinely knows the craft.
Think carefully about this stage. Applying the paper is only the first important step, but it is also one of the key foundations of the entire project. Please forgive my honesty, but it is simply impossible to explain everything in one short post. Someone may have spent months or even years developing these skills and discovering the right techniques through experience. It takes a great deal of learning and practice.
And I am not joking: if you truly want to create beautiful decorations that impress everyone, start taking real steps towards learning the craft. The world is full of knowledge - go and make use of it.
